1 - The Cold Fusion Reactor v4.0 - Description :
The Cold Fusion Reactor ( CFR ) v4.0 uses a big 5000 mL Dewar vessel filled with 2000 mL of demineralized water and 55.3 g of Potassium Carbonate ( K2CO3 ), the electrolyte solution used is 0.2 molar ( 0.2 M, ). The height ( 180 mm ) of the Dewar wall above the surface of the electrolyte avoids some eventual projections of electrolyte outside the reactor.
The Cathode used is a pure tungsten rod ( W ) 3 mm diameter and 45 mm length from tungsten TIG electrodes (WP) commonly used forTIG and Plasma welding. The Anode used is composed of stainless steel grid ( 50 x 160 mm ) maintained with a stainless steel shaft. All the wires connections are made with a 1.5 mm2 copper flexible wire gained with silicon.
The CFR 4.0 is bigger than the CFR v3.0 previously tested ( see below )
2 - Experimental test setup :
The CFR v4.0 is powered with a DC voltage through a bridge rectifier connected through a variable transformer ( Variac ) to the 220V AC power grid line. The voltage input has been measured with a digital oscilloscope Fluke 123 with a Shielded Test Lead STL 120 ( 1:1, 1 Mohms/225 pF ). The current input has been measured with a current clamp CIE Model CA-60A ( Accuracy DC Amps ±1.5%, AC Amps±2% (40Hz-2kHz), AC Amps±4%(2kHz-10kHz), AC Amps±6%(10kHz-20kHz) ). The temperature has been measured with a type "K" temp probe ( NiCrNi ) connected on a VC506 digital multimeter ( -20°C to +1200 °C with an accuracy of +/- 3% ). ( see the photo above ).
3 - RUN #1 - Test results :
RUN #1 - POWER INPUT/OUPUT and EFFICIENCY of the CFR v4.0 :
The Voltage/Current datas logged give an average electrical power input of 1258.4 Watts during 456 seconds, so this gives :
ELECTRICAL ENERGY INPUT = 573842 Joules
The evaporated water in the CFR during the full boiling was 315 mL. We know that we need 2260 J/g to vaporize water. The temperature rise of the 600 mL was 19°C. So, this gives :
ENERGY OUTPUT = ( 315 x 2260 ) + ( 600 x 19 x 4.18 ) = 870740 Joules
Power OUTPUT = 1909.5 Watts, Net Power Gain = 651.1 Watts
Energy OUTPUT/INPUT = 870740 / 573842 = 1.52 |
4 - RUN #2 - Test results :
RUN #2 - POWER INPUT/OUPUT and EFFICIENCY of the CFR v4.0 :
The Voltage/Current datas logged give an average electrical power input of 737.5 Watts during 547.2 seconds, so this gives :
ELECTRICAL ENERGY INPUT = 403538 Joules
The evaporated water in the CFR during the full boiling was 265 mL. We know that we need 2260 J/g to vaporize water. The temperature rise of the 600 mL was 11°C. So, this gives :
ENERGY OUTPUT = ( 265 x 2260 ) + ( 600 x 11 x 4.18 ) = 690860 Joules
Power OUTPUT = 1262.5 Watts, Net Power Gain = 525.1 Watts
Energy OUTPUT/INPUT = 690860 / 403538 = 1.71 |
Notes from Jean-Louis Naudin : In spite of the use of 2000 mL of electrolyte and a small W cathode ( 3 x 45 mm ), the net power gain is still present here in these two tests ( 525 and 651 Watts of power gained ). I have noticed during the tests that the steam production decreases with the time during these two tests runs, this is due to the fact that after few minutes of run the steam recondenses on the wall inside of the Dewar vessel and falls over again into the reactor. This why, I have not yet overcome 200% of efficiency ( like with the CFR v3.0), I think that a better efficiency can be obtained with a bigger tungsten rod or the use of multiple small Tungsten rods and also with a new design of the steam exit from the reactor. More tests runs are coming soon...
